The Massive List of Marketing Tools & WordPress Plugins

Mirex Marketing has aggregated these various resources to supplement marketing services. This list can save you a lot of precious time because either we’ve already tried and vetted these tools or they are well-known within the industry and consdered among the top tools.

Some are free, some are paid. Many of the paid resources might offer a commission to us, at no addtional cost to you, if you click on our links to get them. Clicking on affiliate links does not add to the price of these tools; it’s simply a nice way to help us out for aggregating this list, and in some cases you might even get a discount by using our links.

These are tools that we’d recommend even without the option to receive a commission. Paid or free, they were selected because they work well or they have an outstanding reputation within the digital marketing community for being effective and well-developed. The only exception is when links to other lists are included which we don’t control, but they might provide other useful resources.

These resources can change regularly so it doesn’t hurt to return to this page occasionally. If you discover that one of these has become outdated or is no longer available please let us know.

The Following are specifically NOT recommended resources.

We can still work with you if you are using these resources, but if you’re choosing a new tool or resource then the ones we recommend are better for various reasons. Our focus is to make sure you have affordable, business-grade tools that are capable of helping you achieve marketing objectives. If the tool you are using does not do that, then it has a cost even if its free. It is preventing your business from growing. The following are general statements, not absolute rules. Technology is always evolving, so an application could come out at any time and surprise us, but until something changes, we recommend avoiding these types of tools if you can. You should also generally avoid “professionals” who recommend these types of tools, because it usually means they are not conscious of your whole marketing or the entire customer journey online.

“Web Builders” are not recommended – Web builders can be used as a gateway to help get businesses online. If the business does not have the budget for a better site (usually small businesses or startups), then it’s better to be online than to not be online. Yet, as pretty as these types of sites have evolved over time, they are not business-grade sites capable of achieving marketing objectives. WordPress is not a “web builder”; it is a Content Management System (CMS). It is the most cost-effective way to have a business-grade site. See Website Services for more info.

“All-In-One” Software is generally not recommended – We can understand the appeal of All-In-One software. A single point of entry to manage all your business apps seems more secure and easier to manage. However, the marketing tools that are part of All-In-One software are usually added on as an afterthought without truly focusing on their development to make them powerful and effective. When an individual tool is developed for a specific purpose, it will always be better than those that are packaged with All-In-One software.

Any “Addon” Software that was included to inflate the price of the flagship software and was not specifically developed for the purpose it serves, is not recommended. This is almost the same as “All-In-One” software, but it’s still a guideline that merrits it’s own explanation because applications that are not labeled as “All-In-One” can still do this. A good example is CRMs might include review generation features, but they would not be nearly as effective as the Review Generator provided by Mirex Marketing.

Applications that are not integration-friendly are not recommended. WordPress is so common and developer friendly that if an application does integrate with it (or Zapier), then the application is either under-developed or purposely meant to be a closed system. Applications that are under-developed or meant to be closed systems can be a recipe for trouble. Somewhere down the line you will have to start over and that will send operations backwards for your business.

The phrase “search engine marketing” might mean different things to the layperson and to digital marketing professionals. Within the industry “search engine marketing” is often synonymous with “pay-per-click” advertising on search engines, the most dominant being Google. Yet the traditional use of the word “marketing” means much more than just advertising; so the layperson may interpret “search engine marketing” to mean any use of search engines, both paid and organic, to promote their business. Mirex Marketing considers Search Engine Marketing (SEM) to be both Search Engine Advertising (which we would coin as SEA), and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). (SEM = SEA + SEO). Further, the use of the label “pay-per-click” advertising is also becoming outadated, since there are now digital advertising platforms that allow the advertiser to pay for other high-value actions besides clicks. Mirex Marketing will therefore often abbreviate digital advertising as PPC+, for “pay-per-click plus”.
