The Massive List Of Marketing Tools & WordPress Plugins

Mirex Marketing has aggregated these various resources to supplement marketing services. This list can save you a lot of precious time because either we’ve already tried and vetted these tools or they are well-known within the industry and consdered among the top tools.

Some are free, some are paid. Many of the paid resources might offer a commission to us at no addtional cost to you, if you choose to use them and click on the links provided to get them. Clicking on affiliate links does not add to the price of these tools; it’s simply a nice way to help us out for aggregating this list, and in some cases you might even get a discount by using our links.

These are tools that we’d recommend even without the option to receive a commission. Paid or free, they were selected because they work well or they have an outstanding reputation within the digital marketing community for being effective and well-developed.

These resources can change regularly so it doesn’t hurt to return to this page occasionally. We do our best to keep these resources up to date, but the evolving nature of technology makes it easy to miss things sometimes. If you discover that one of these has become outdated or is no longer available please let us know.

Fill this space with anchor links for convenience.

The phrase “search engine marketing” might mean different things to the layperson and to digital marketing professionals. Within the industry “search engine marketing” is often synonymous with “pay-per-click” advertising on search engines, the most dominant being Google. Yet the traditional use of the word “marketing” means much more than just advertising; so the layperson may interpret “search engine marketing” to mean any use of search engines, both paid and organic, to promote their business. Mirex Marketing considers Search Engine Marketing (SEM) to be both Search Engine Advertising (which we would coin as SEA), and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). (SEM = SEA + SEO). Further, the use of the label “pay-per-click” advertising is also becoming outadated, since there are now digital advertising platforms that allow the advertiser to pay for other high-value actions besides clicks. Mirex Marketing will therefore often abbreviate digital advertising as PPC+, for “pay-per-click plus”.

Top WordPress Hosting Providers

These providers are the top choices for WordPress hosting. They are specifically optimized for WordPress speed and performance. If you think of your website as a collection of files, then these are the servers or computers where your website files are stored online and connected to the internet.

Mirex Marketing has a policy not to hold digital properties hostage. Any website you pay to have built should be your own, not that of the developer who built it. That’s why when we build sites, we build them on your hosting account and no one else’s. Yet, it is also important to note that all hosting services are “rented” and must be renewed in a timely manner to keep them; purchasing more than one year in advance and setting to autorenew are the best ways to avoid service interruptions.

Mirex Marketing can build a business-grade website and manage it for you. Learn more about Website Services. If you would like Mirex Marketing to build, manage or migrate your site, you do not have to go through the process of purchasing hosting on your own, we can set up a video meeting and help you through it via screenshare.

The Following are specifically NOT recommended for hosting or building websites.

We can still work with you if you are using these services, but if you’re choosing a new service then the ones above are better for various reasons. It is the hosting that we are not recommending; these resources might have other good services or tools.

GoDaddy Hosting is not recommended – It’s a great Domain Name Registrar; we are not a fan of the way they throttle traffic.

Host Gator is not recommended – This tends to be a popular one but we haven’t had the best experiences with it for WordPress.

WordPress.com is not recommended – Do not confuse with WordPress.org. For multiple reasons we suggest using your own hosting with an independent installation of WordPress.

Namecheap Hosting is not recommended – Though it’s OK to use for a Domain Name Registrar.

Any “Web Builder” is not recommended – We do not consider these to be business-grade sites capable of achieving marketing objectives.

Frequently Asked Questions:

If you are a client of Mirex Marketing, you do not have to purchase hosting on your own. We can do a video meeting with you to walk you through it and make sure you have what you need. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions.

Frequently Asked Questions about WordPress Hosting (FAQ)

Click the + icon on each to toggle the answer.

Should I buy a domain name with my hosting provider?

You can buy your domain name with your hosting provider or you can keep them separate. There are Pros and Cons to both options. It’s more convenient to have them in one place but it’s more secure to have them separate. We hope to have your full and complete trust but we can’t speak for anyone else you may hire who will require access.

Do I need Domain Name Privacy?

You will certainly get spam calls, email and snail mail if you do not have it, especially if registering a domain name that is clearly for a business. Yet, whether you actually need to keep your contact information private would really depend on whether the address for your business is private or not. Most home-based businesses would want domain privacy; a lot of businesses with a public address would want it public and not pay extra.

Do I need the security upgrades that the hosting tries to sell me?

It’s always better to have more security than less, but the cost is always a factor. If you plan on going with the Webmaster Service that will give you a lot of basic security features, such as backups kept independent of hosting and a firewall plugin. There’s a lot more information on Website security below.

I've completed the purchase for hosting and the setup wizard is asking me to set up WordPress. Do I need to do that part?

It’s up to you if you want to do that part or stop there. If we are building your site then we can take it from that point and you don’t have to do anyting else. Again, we can do the whole thing with you on a video meeting if you’d like.

Domain Name Registrars (DNRs)

Your hosting provider can be your Domain Name Registrar, but it does not have to be. For when you want to keep the hosting and domain name separate these DNRs are recommended. For example, you can have your domain registered with GoDaddy and your hosting provided by Siteground, Bluehost or another hosting provider above.

Frequently Asked Questions about Domain Names

Click the + icon on each to toggle the answer.

How is the Domain Name different from my hosting?

Think of hosting as renting an apartment or a storage unit, that’s where your website, which is a collection of files, is stored. Now let’s say you wanted to make that apartment open to anyone and everyone who wants to visit, but you don’t want them to have to memorize a numerical address which is long and difficult, so you give it a nick-name that is easier to remember – Happy Place. That’s your domain name. Now imagine everyone has a car where they can say “take me to Happy Place” and the car is smart enough to take them directly to your apartment. That’s their web browser.

What if you change your apartment to a different place across town? You’d still asign the nick name to it so people can still find you (online).

Should I buy a domain name with my hosting provider or keep them seperate?

How is a domain name different from a URL?

For the layperson they are essentially the same. They are both the “address” of your website, though one has a more technical explanation.

A business-grade website should have an SSL Certificate which changes your URL from http://www.yourwebsite.com to https://www.yourwebsite.com (the extra “s” after the http is for “secure”). Though if a user omits the “s” they will still be able to view your website.

What is an SSL Certificate and do I need one?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It’s an added layer of security for your website. They were traditionally only considered for ecommerce websites but they are now a requirement of all business-grade websites and an SEO ranking factor. Yes, you need it. It should be included with your hosting provider, though you do have the option fo getting it from an external provider.

Getting an SSL Certificate changes your URL from http:// to https:// at the beginning of your website address. The “s” stands for “secure”. There is more information on website security below.

What if the domain name that I want is not available?

The first and most affordable option is to find one that is available that works. If it’s available then all you do is pay to register it.

If it’s not available and you want it badly enough then Mirex Marketing has a domain name brokering service. We can help you make an offer to the owner and if they are willing to sell it then help get it transferred to your account.

If you have any trademark claims then you could also try acquiring it through a lawyer. This is more aggressive, could take more time and cost more due to legal fees.

Email Service Providers for Branded Emails or Custom Emails (you@yourdomain.com)

This section for branded emails is relevant since it’s related to your branding and connected with your domain name (above).

These are for personal, branded business emails, intended for one-to-one or small group, every-day communication. These are not intended as a solution for Email Marketing (those resources are below). All businesses should have branded emails, not just for a consistent branding appearance but also for business-grade privacy and security.

Mirex Marketing is not an IT service; we are a Marketing Agency. We can help set up branded emails if needed, though we often defer to IT people for this since they will handle more of your technology stack, including technology used for internal and external communications. We only work with the technology that is related to marketing and branding.

The Following are specifically NOT recommended for branded emails.

We can still work with you if you are using these services, but if you’re choosing a new service then then Google Workspace is better for various reasons.

Office 365 – Microsoft’s hallmark software, Word, Power Point and Excell are arguably better than Google’s counterparts, but Google’s email (Gmail, both free and paid) has always been better, and the Office 365 business suite is hard to work with. Google Workspace also has a free feature where they assign an email address to a Group. This is an extra email that your marketing team can use for which you don’t have to pay extra. All internal and external members of the group will receive emails sent to the group.

Frequently Asked Questions about Domain Names

Click the + icon on each to toggle the answer.

Can I use the email service offered by my hosting provider?

All hosting providers used to provide this, but some have removed it from their line of services. If your hosting provider offers it then it can help you get by if you have nothing else. Yet Google Workspace is better.

If I sign up for Google Workspace where do I go to login?

Once you sign up for a Google Workspace account, you’ll indicate how many emails (or inboxes) you are purcahsing for your organization.

Whenever you need to change settings in your Google Workspace Account for your orgnization you’ll go to admin.google.com.

You and everyone else in your business who has an email will go to gmail.com to access your email inbox (same login page for branded and free emails). People who love Gmail will love Google Workspace. People who don’t love Gmail compared to other email services are weird.

Why can't I use this for email marketing?

If you use a personal email inbox to send messages to multiple people at once you’ll get flagged as a spammer by your email service provider and/or the services that receive the emails. It’s terrible for the user experience, and it’s not compliant with rules and laws that regulate email marketing. All of this applies whether you are using paid branded emails or free emails. For email marketing you need email marekting tools listed below and there is more information in that section about the CAN-SPAM Act, GDPR and CCPA.

Do I need more than one email if I'm currently the only person in my business?

You will certainly want an email for yourself which might be yourname@yourdomain.com.

You might also want some generic emails for your organization like admin@yourdomain or customerservice@yourdomain. At first you do not have to purchase seperate inboxes for these emails. They can be set up as aliases, meaning they will send messages to your inbox.

For various reasons, your marketing team will also need one or more emails that is not shared with your inbox. You can by an inbox for that with it’s own email and that gives you the most features. Yet, we can also create a Group in Google Workspace which automatically assigns an email address without having to pay for an extra inbox. Anyone who is part of the group will receive emails sent to the group.

Professional WordPress Themes & Page Builders

Building a WordPress website often starts with a WordPress Theme, which is a template. This is one of the features that allows us to build a site much, much quicker than custom coded sites; (custom-coded sites can take 6 months or more and cost 2-10 times as much).

Mirex Marketing will generally only use professional WordPress themes and page builders. The basic WordPress content editor (Classic or Gutenberg) and the free themes in the WordPress respository are not usually sufficient to create business-grade sites. Mirex Marketing clients are never expected to pay extra for professional themes and page builders, at least for the first year. For some of their marketing objectives they may have ongoing subscriptions for paid plugins, but we will help to avoid that whenever possible, and in some cases we can include some paid renewals with the Webmaster Service.

There is a lot more to building a business-grade website than simply installing a theme; it’s just the beginning of about a month-long project. So don’t let the prices of themes in these marketplaces make you wonder why our quotes to build websites are what they are. BTW, the quotes are generally more affordable than other firms who build sites with the same quality. More than that, it’s not as common to have a firm that specializes in both WordPress websites and Ad Management. Only this type of firm will be conscious about conversion optimization, and accomplishing your marketing objectives throughout the customer journey.

Including this section should be useful for clients who want to browse available themes for their new website project. Also, clients who want to add content to their sites on their own can have easy access to the training available with each resource, once they know how their site is built. However, if you are subscribed to the Webmaster Service then you don’t have to worry about it. We will publish what you provide to us, generally within a business day. This section may also be useful for other site visitors who are not clients, so enjoy.

The Following are specifically NOT recommended WordPress plugins and tools.

We can still work with you if you are using these services, but if you’re choosing a new service then then resources above are better for various reasons.

Hello Dolly – It’s a WordPress tradition to include this plugin by default with every installation. It serves no practical purpose. It was intended as a demo plugin when WordPress was first created.

JetPack Plugin without any upgrades – Jetpack is often included with WordPress by default. It has a nice set up upgrades for site perforance, security, social syncing and more. The free features and every upgrade have an alternative, and some of the alternatives are better. For example, a Google Anlytics plugin is better than using WordPress site stats. We only recommned Jetpack if you’re going to use any or all of their upgrades.

WordPress Contact Form Plugins, Plus SMTP & Other Contact Form Upgrades

Contact forms on your website allow site visitors to contact you via email. This could be a lead for your business, so its important to optimize the user experience, and make sure the contact forms actually work. A guideline for the user experience is: if it is simple then more people will fill it out, if it is specific the more dedicated people will fill it out, if it is too complex then almost no one will fill it out. We keep this in mind when deciding which fields to include in the form and whether they are required fields or not. Simply adding a required field for the zip code can help reduce spam while keeping it user-friendly. See more tools for Spam under Security Plugins above. In cases like surveys, the user would anticipate filling out more complex forms and answering more questions.

One of the reasons we recommended the hosting providers above is because they are more reliable for processing emails from your website. When an email is sent from your website, it actually pass through multiple server touchpoints before you receive the message. If any technical issues occur then you may have lost that lead. In addition to the contact forms themselves, we are also including upgraded features and services. One of those is SMTP, which stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, and it’s a fancy way of saying that we are routing the email messages through an alternate and reliable email processor instead of having it sent through the hosing provider.

Email marketing optin forms are more specialized forms for capturing the emails of those who wish to optin to your newsletter (usually to recieve a giveaway or other benefit that you are offering in exchange for their optin). Email Marketing optin forms are listed below with other Email Marketing & CRM resouces. Yet, they will often integrate with the tools listed here.

Frequently Asked Questions About Contact Forms

These tools can also be used for WordPress Performance & Security Optimization.

Frequently Asked Questions about Contact Forms

Click the + icon on each to toggle the answer.

Are the paid contact form upgrades necessary or worth it?

Usually businesses start with basic (free) contact form and then upgrade to paid services as needed. As the business grows they may have other reasons for paid upgrades, such as the ability to create surveys for marketing research.

The paid upgrades are certainly nice. They improve message delivery, make it less likely for messages to end up in spam, store contacts and messages as a backup, integrate with other powerful tools, add conditional logic, and much more. (Conditional logic would be something like “Are you in the US”, yes or no? If they say “yes” then they are asked an additional seperate question that would not be asked if they said “no”. There are plenty of marketing, sales and operational cases for this.

Messages from the website are going to my spam folder. How can we stop that?

There are two ways. They can both stop it from happening but work best when done together.

The first is to mark the message as “not spam” and move it to the inbox, even if you’ve read it. This helps your email software learn to recognize those messages as safe.

The second is email authentication, which adds DMARC, DKIM and SPF to the marketing alphabet soup.

What are DMARC, DKIM and SPF

DMARC, DKIM and SPF are three different methods of email authentication. They not only improve the deliverability of branded emails (you@yourdomain.com), but they also prevent third parties from trying to use your domain name to create fake emails for spam and phising schemes. (Spam is any unwanted form of communication. Phising is when a malicious sender is pretending to be someone they are not in order to gather information. For example, they might pretend they are your bank and ask you for your account number).

DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance. It tells a receiving email server what to do with a message if it does not pass DKIM and SPF.

DKIM stands for DomainKeys Identified Mail. It is an encrypted signature that verifies that an email did indeed come from it’s associated domain (the yourdomain.com part of you@yourdomain.com)

SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework. It is a list of servers (read by machines, not humans) that indicate where branded emails are sent from.

Mirex Marketing can set these up for you as part of the Websmaster Service. It usually done at the same time we are setting up SMTP when needed.

What is SMTP?

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, it’s a fancy way of saying we are routing the email through a reliable email processor instead of through your hosting provider.

Can we set up my forms so that the user can attach files?

This is possible but we don’t suggest it. It can use up your hosting resources/bandwidth and bog down your WordPress installation with files that are not directly by your website. If you decide that you need it, then we’d impose a file size limit and try to route the upload to a Google Drive or other cloud storage that is not your website.

WooCommerce Plugin & Extensions for WordPress Ecommerce Sites

Include Woocommerce marketing plugins, like promotions and product reviews.

Look up Automattic agency program.

WooCommerce Plugin & Extensions for WordPress Ecommerce Sites

WooCommerce is a product of Automattic, the creators of WordPress. It’s listed as the first specialty site plugin because simple ecommerce is the most common WordPress upgrade AND because other specialty upgrade plugins might use WooCommerce for product listings and shopping cart functionality. So WooCommerce might be used to create a traditional retail store online for selling widgets, or it can be used in combination with an Events Calendar for selling tickets. There are multiple possibilities.

This is the first use of the word “extension” on this page. Think of an extension as a plugin for a plugin. Just like a WordPress plugin extends the funcitonality of WordPress, an Extension extends the basic functionality of the main plugin, though the Extension is installed the same way as any Plugin. Some of the payment processing extensions are listed below with Credit Card Processing.

This is not meant to be a comprehensive list for WooCommerce. We are really just highlighting some of the important ones. There’s a lot that can be done, and when building an Ecommerce site for clients Mirex Marketing will help determin the full scope of your project and make sure every feature you need can be included before we start the project.

The Following are specifically NOT recommended for WooCommerce or In-Store Credit Card Processing.

We can still work with you if you are using these services, but if you’re choosing a new service then then the resources above are better for various reasons.

Square – As a payment processor Square is just as decent as PayPal or Stripe, but they have become too much of an All-In-One software, which encourages business owners not to look for better tools and then wonder why the marketing isn’t working. The marketing tools included with All-In-One software are often added as a side note and inadequate for accomplish marketing objectives. For every marketing feature that Square offers, there is probably something better listed on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Merchant Services

Click the + icon on each to toggle the answer.

Which merchant services should I pick?

If you’re just starting out, then PayPal or Stripe will have no up front costs, but their per-transaction fees will be higher (around 3 or 3.5% + $0.30 -ish).

After you reach a threshold of monthly transactions then it makes more sense to select a merchant services provider that might have an annual fee but their per-transaction fee is often 1% or less. That would mean you’re saving 67% in processing fees or more, minus a nominal annual fee, compared to PayPal or Stripe.

Do not make a quick decision on any service that requires a term commitment (that’s good advice on any service, not just merchant services).

If you buy merchant services from a reseller, then often you will not pay more and the reseller will often act as a contact for support, and they will be invested in your continuing use of their program.

There may be industry-specific considerations regarding fees and hardware, but don’t let an industry-specific provider convince you that they are the only option just because they are industry-specific.

WordPress Performance & Security Plugins, Services & Tools

Includes SSL, CDN, Cache, Backups, Uptime Monitoring & More

The first step in optimizing WordPress performance and security is choosing a good hosting provider (see recommended hosting providers above). They might have features such as SSL Certificates, CDNs, backups, basic malware protection and other features included in their plans. They will also have optional server-side security upgrades. The resources listed here are used in addition to server-side upgrades. Most of these resources are WordPress-side upgrades. For clarity, WordPress is a CMS software installed on your hosting server. Optimal security includes both server-side security provided by your hosting and third parties, and WordPress-side security installed with or connected to WordPress.

Performance Optimization means keeping the site loading properly and quickly. This is important for the user experience and SEO. Security Optimization is also important for SEO. If a site gets hacked or goes offline then it can be flagged as unsafe and/or removed from search results, and it can take time to recover.

The Mirex Marketing Webmaster Service includes ongoing performance optimization and light security optimization. Yet, there are certainly ways to upgrade your site beyond what is included with the webmaster service. Mirex Marketing is generally not a hack repair service, though we can often restore a hacked website with the regular backups that are included with the Webmaster Service. For more severe hacks, the services of other parties may be needed. Your hosting provider might have an in-house hack repair service; Securi is also one of the best options for hack repair.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates

SSL Certificates are noted here because it is an important security feature of websites, and it changes your domain name from http:// to https:// (the s is for secure). While this feature is traditionally considered for ecommerce sites that accept credit card payments, it is now a required feature for all business-grade websites and it’s an SEO ranking factor.

An SSL Certificate is generally acquired through your hosting provider or domain name registrar (see above), and it’s often included with your plan at no additional cost (though paid upgrades are available). You can still purchase an SSL Certificate from a provider that is not your hosting provider or domain name registrar, but that might take additional setup. Kudos to Let’s Encrypt for providing many of the Free SSL Certificates available from hosting providers and influencing the market in general to include SSLs with hosting plans for a safer internet.

Additional Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)

A CDN is a Content Delivery Network which is good for website security and loading time. It makes copies of your site on different servers throughout the network worldwide so it can be delivered quicker to the browsers of nearby users. These are alternate options to Cloudflare, which is featured above. Even if your hosting provider includes a CDN, you can use Cloudflare or one of these and it will help improve the security and peformance of your site. You’d only need ONE in addition to the one provided by hosting.

WordPress Spam Prevention can also be supplemented by customizing your contact form with required fields that most bots would not be smart enought to complete, but do not comprimize the user experience. For many businesses, asking for the Zip Code would be relevant, in addition to the standard Name, Email, Phone and Message fields. See Contact forms below. Another option to prevent it is to not publish email addresses in the content of the website. The contact form will set up to the appropriate email already.

Additional WordPress Performance & Caching Plugins (Free & Paid)

Caching is a another “copy storing” method that helps speed up websites. It’s different from CDNs mentioned above, but “copy storing” is a sufficient description for this page, and your CDN might have caching. These are “site cache” resources, but your browser also has caching functionality, which is browser-side caching. For clarity (or futher confusion, but we hope not), there can be server-side caching, site-side caching and browser-side caching. These plugins help with site caching, as well as CSS Minifying and other performance optimization.

These are only listed as options if you do not have the Webmaster Service. If you have the Webmaster Service then WP Rocket, the paid WordPress performance plugin featured above, is included for free and you would not need these. (It does not help to have more than one; that can actually create conflicts).

Some hosting providers are including site caching with their services now. Some have their own solution, some are using one of these options on the backend. If that is creating a conflict with your preferred caching solution then the host’s site cache option can often be disabled in WordPress settings.

Large files, including large images, are one of the things that can slow down a site. Image Optimization Plugins help reduce the file size without compromising image quality when viewed on the web. WordPress Accessibility for ADA

Website Accesibility is a term that implies a website can be viewed, read, understood or observed by persons with disabilities; it does not simply mean that your website is live or can be accessed on the internet (for that see Uptime Monitoring above). People with visual or hearing disabilities might access a website with or without a device to assist them.

Website Accessibility is mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for business with 15 employees or more. Yet, it would be good for any business, especially businesses or nonprofits that knowingly serve individuals with disbilities, and it can improve SEO.

Mirex Marketing will generally build accessible websites since a lot of the principles of accessbilit are the same as the principles of conversion optimization (though we cannot guarantee it and we are not legal advisors).

The tools listed here will certainly help make a website more accessbile but they also do not guarantee to make a website fully compliant.

Customer Relationship Management (CRMs) & Email Marketing

As software evolves it becomes harder and hard to separate CRMs and Email Marketing, but they are still distinct categories of marketing tools. CRMs might include Email Marketing features.

The following are NOT recommended:

All-In-One Suites, in general. There may be some that are good, but usually just add their marketing apps as a side note, and because of that they are ineffective marketing tools.

Closed Systems, their model is to lock you in. These are the systems that hold your digital properties hostage when you want to leave. We suggest exploring integration-friendly options.

WordPress Popup Plugins For Email Marketing

WordPress Popup Plugins For Email Marketing will allow you to capture the contact informaton of website visitors who are willing to opt-in to your email newsletter. They are usually willing to do this for a free giveaway, discount code, or download (offering something in exchange for the opt-in is also suggested for GDPR and CCPA). When used correctly, popups are a great way to improve website conversions.

Chatbots for WordPress

Usually the first place to look for a chatbot for your WordPress site is your CRM – if you’re already using a CRM. If you’re not using a CRM then check out the options above. If the CRM you are already using has a chatbot then you’d want to try that one first.

The Following are specifically NOT recommended WordPress Plugins For Analytics, SEO, PPC+, and Conversion Tracking.

We can still work with you if you are using these services, but if you’re choosing a new service then then ones above are better for various reasons.

JetPack Plugin Without Paid Upgrades – The free Jetpack plugin without paid upgrades allows you to connect your independent WordPress installation with WordPress.com for website stats. This is a decent feature, but if you don’t plan on using the paid upgrades of Jetpack then connecting Google Analytics with the site via the Google Sit Kit plugin is better.
